SHOPPING When we want to buy something, we go to a shop. There are many kinds of shops in every town or city, but most of them have a food supermarket, a department store, men’s and women’s clothing stores, a grocery, a bakery and a butchery. I like to do my shopping at big department stores and supermarkets. They sell various goods under one roof and this is very convenient. A department store is composed of many departments: ready-made clothes, fabrics, shoes, sports goods, toys, china and glass, electric appliances, cosmetics, linen, curtains, cameras, records, etc. You can buy everything you like there. The things for sale are on the counters so that they can be easily seen. In the women’s clothing department you can find dresses, costumes, blouses, skirts, coats, beautiful underwear and many other things. In the men’s clothing department you can choose suits, trousers, overcoats, ties, etc. In the knitwear department one can buy sweaters, cardigans, short-sleeved and long-sleeved pull-overs, woollen jackets. In the perfumery they sell face cream and powder, lipstick, lotions and shampoos. In a food supermarket we can also buy many different things at once: sausages, fish, sugar, macaroni, flour, cereals, tea. At the butcher’s there is a wide choice of meat and poultry. At the bakery you buy brown and white bread, rolls, biscuits. The greengrocery is stocked with cabbage, potatoes, onions, cucumbers, carrots, beetroots, green peas and what not. Everything is sold here ready-weighed and packed. At a dairy you can buy milk, cream, cheese, butter and many other products. The method of shopping may vary. It may be a self-service shop where the customer goes from counter to counter selecting and putting into a basket what he wishes to buy. If it is not a self-service shop the shop-assistant helps the customer in finding what he wants. You pay money to the cashier and he gives you back the change and a sales slip. Nick needed some new clothes badly. There are a lot of shops, supermarkets and department stores in the centre of the city, so we decided to go through some of them. The first shop on our way was a large supermarket. We needed some groceries .It seemed to us that on the counters and shelves there was everything one could want. We could see sausages of different kinds, fish, meat, poultry. At the bakery there was bread, rolls, buscuits. At the dairy department there was milk, cream, cheese, butter. Everything was nicely packed and when we came to the cashier our baskets were full of groceries. Then we went to the department store. We couldn’t go past the electric appliances department. There were a lot of computers, video cassette recorders, TV sets, hi-fi centres and tape recorders. We wanted to have a look at the latest models. But we needed some presents. It was my mother’s birthday in a few days and Nick’s father’s birthday in a week. I decided to buy a food processor and Nick chose an electric razor. At the men’s clothing department there were a lot of suits, trousers, jackets, shirts and many other things. Nick needed a suit because he was going to the theatre with his girlfriend. Nick is very tall and slim. So it is always difficult to find clothes that would suit him perfectly. The shop assistant asked Nick’s size and offered him a nice suit. But when Nick tried it on I couldn’t help laughing. The jacket was too big for him and the trousers were too short. He looked so funny! The shop assistant then suggested that Nick should try on some jackets and some trousers separately. The pin-striped jacket matched the black trousers perfectly. The shop assistant also showed Nick a wonderful tie and he immediately agreed to buy it. We had to go home by taxi because our bags were so huge that we could hardly lift them. Do you prefer to go to big or small shops? What are the advantages of big shops? What do you think about the prices? What is sold at the butcher’s (baker’s, greengrocer’s)? Why are there more customers in the shops before holidays? When you have to buy a lot of different food, do you make a shopping list or do you simply memorize everything what you need? Many people prefer to buy food in the supermarkets in order to save their time. And what about you? What do you buy more often food or clothes? Are there any price differences for food and clothes in the shops and at the market? Where is the quality of products higher? Are you pleased with the variety of goods and services in our shops? What would you like to improve? Do you always buy anything when you’re inside a shop or do you sometimes go in just to look round? Do you always try on a thing before you buy it? Do you like buying expensive things or cheap ones? Give your reasons. Which method of shopping do you like most of all? IV. Ask your groupmate: what s(he) does when (s)he wants to buy something; what kinds of shops there are in our city; what departments a department store is divided into; what (s)he can find in the men’s clothing department; what (s)he can choose in the women’s clothing department; if (s)he tries the thing on after (s)he has chosen it; where (s)he goes if (s)he needs a jacket or a pullover; where shoes are sold; what (s)he can buy in a supermarket; what the greengrocery is stocked with; what (s)he can buy at a dairy; if (s)he often goes shopping; if (s)he prefers to go to big or small shops. V. Translate into English. 1. Когда нам нужно что-нибудь купить, мы идем в магазин. В любом большом городе есть много видов магазинов: продовольственные, универмаги, магазины мужской и женской одeжды, овощные и мясные, магазины хлебо-булочных изделий. 2. Многие предпочитают делать покупки в универсальных магазинах и магазинах самообслуживания, т.к. в одном месте можно купить практически все, что нужно. Другие делают покупки в небольших специализированных магазинах, где может быть больше товара в ассортименте. 3. Накануне Нового года мы с братом решили сделать некоторые покупки. Я предпочитаю делать покупки в крупном торговом центре, поэтому мы отправились в универмаг. Мне нужны были кожаные перчатки и туфли, а брату - пальто и кроссовки. Мы зашли в отдел галантереи и я примерила пару перчаток. К сожалению, они оказались мне тесны. 4. В отделе женской обуви я попросила брата помочь мне выбрать туфли. Он посоветовал примерить коричневые и сказал, что они подойдут к моему зеленому костюму. Туфли подошли по размеру. Я заплатила деньги в кассу и мне выдали чек. 5. В отделе мужской одежды был большой выбор пальто. Брат примерил несколько моделей и остановил свой выбор на пальто синего цвета. Оно хорошо сидело на нем и было модным. 6. В отделе мужской обуви брат долго примерял кроссовки. Одна пара была ему велика, другая не подходила по цвету. Нам пришлось обратиться к продавщице, чтобы она помогла выбрать то, что нужно. 7. По дороге домой мы зашли в продовольственный магазин. Нам необходимо было купить к праздничному обеду колбасу, сыр, банку зеленого горошка, конфеты и пирожные. Мясо я предпочитаю покупать на рынке. Там всегда есть большой выбор и можно торговаться. 8. Мы купили все необходимое, погрузили все коробки и сумки в машину и отправились домой готовиться к празднику. 9. Какие товары поступили в продажу? - Летняя одежда для мужчин и женщин. У вас богатый ассортимент товаров в магазинах? - Не очень. Вам завернуть платье? - Да, упакуйте, пожалуйста. Как долго ты уже стоишь в очереди? Мне к лицу этот костюм? - Да, конечно. Из чего сделан этот свитер? - Из шерсти. Какой размер Вы носите? - 37. Это платье не подходит вам по размеру. Примерьте другое. Я хотел бы купить пылесос, но этот слишком дорогой. Нет ли у вас дешевле? Могу ли я расплатиться по кредитной карточке? - Да, обратитесь, пожалуйста, к кассиру. Вы доставляете товар на дом? - Да, за дополнительную оплату. VI.
